The conclusion I have come to is NO!

Let us first of all examine briefly what Piracy is all about?

I found this on Autodesk site and it sums up the matter quite excellently in the first 4 points, which are reproduced below:

1. What is software “piracy”?

Software “piracy” is the unauthorized possession and/or use of software. It is a crime no different from shoplifting software from store shelves. Purchasers of software do not actually own the software. What they own is the right to use the software according to the terms of the publisher’s license. Purchasers agree to abide by the terms of the license, which typically limits copying privileges to a single copy for backup purposes.
All legal software is supplied with a license. This applies whether the software is acquired for use on one machine, for networking across a number of machines, or if it is pre-installed as part of a system. The license is designed to protect the rights of software developers and is enforced by copyright laws.

Piracy may take many forms, including:
* unauthorized copying of software programs purchased legitimately, also known as “end-user” piracy. This can occur when the number of PCs installed with the software exceeds the licenses that an individual or company has purchased;
* gaining illegal access to protected software, also knwn as “cracking”; nd
* reproducing and/or distributing counterfeit or unauthorized software, often over the counter, or sold, bartered, or shared by individuals on the Internet; and software programs pre-installed by vendors who sell computers without providing the accompanying software license
2. What is the difference between criminal and civil software piracy?

The majority of software piracy is committed by small and medium-sized businesses with no clear policy about proper software use. Business owners who are not legal with the number of seats used within their firm are subject to significant civil penalties.

Criminal copyright infringers include counterfeiters burning copies of software for sale on auction sites; individuals and organizations that create and distribute counterfeit CD-ROMs, which in some cases are mass-produced in government-sanctioned factories around the world; and “hard disk loaders”—those who sell computers loaded with illegally copied software programs as a purchase incentive.

3. What are the penalties for software piracy?

The criminal penalties range from fines to jail terms or both. Civil penalties may reach as high as $150,000 for each infringing work. For commercial piracy, the government can also criminally prosecute you for copyright infringement, and if convicted, you can be fined up to $250,000, or sentenced to jail for up to five years, or both..

4. What are the risks associated with using pirated software?

The following are some of the risks associated with using pirated software:

* Pirated software often lacks the important elements, documentation, and comes with no warranty protection or upgrade options;
* Counterfeit disks may be infected with viruses that will damage your hard drive or cripple your network, without the benefit of technical support;
* Copying or using illegally copied software puts your company at risk for copyright infringement;
* Pirated software that is not functional, or that contains viruses, wastes company resources, and drives up IT costs;
* May lead to civil penalties and criminal prosecution;
* Negative PR about your company could result from the allegation.

So what do you feel? Do we need this aggravation? Is it necessary to take a guilt trip everytime a Pirated Software is installed?

Every virus has its own personality. Viruses differ in many ways, each having its own unique properties that make it different. Here are some ways that viruses differ from each other:

• SIZE – A virus can be as small as 66 bytes or less, or as large as 4096 bytes or more. Compared to most computer programs a virus must be very small.

• METHOD OF INFECTION – A virus can infect the host program in different ways. Below are three methods commonly used. They are by no means the only ways, but they are the most common. It is possible for a virus to use one or more of these methods.

1. OVERWRITING – When a virus infects using this method, it will simply write a copy of itself over the begining of the host program. This is a very simple method and is used by more primitive viruses.  Overwriting tends to make the user suspicious because the host program no longer functions. This method of infection causes no change in the size of an infected program.

3. APPENDING – This method is a bit more complex. The virus appends itself onto the end of the host program and also edits the begining of the program. When the user runs the infected program it will jump to the end of the program where the virus is located, perform the functions of the virus, then return and continue to run the host program. To the user, the program is functioning normally. This method of infection causes infected programs to increase in size. Some appending viruses are unable to tell whether or not they have already infected a program and will continue to infect the program hundreds of times, causing it to grow considerably in size.

5. DISK INFECTORS – Other viruses will infect the boot record or partition table. This is an executable area of the disk that is automatically run every time you boot up from the disk. This means that as soon as the computer boots up, the virus is in memory.

• TSR -(transient but stay resident!) A virus may or may not become resident in memory. If it does go TSR, then its chances of infecting files are greatly increased. Otherwise it can only do its stuff when an infected program is run. If the virus is in memory it can infect files any time it chooses. Partition table and boot sector infecting viruses are always TSRs.
• STEALTH – Some TSR viruses use a sophisticated technique called Stealth cloaking. What this means is the virus will fool the system so that everything appears to be normal. When a user does a directory listing the virus will intercept the disk read, and alter the data so that the file sizes appear to be unchanged, when in actuality they have increased in size. Boot sector infectors may use stealth so that when the user attempts to view the boot record, instead of showing the actual boot record, a copy of the old boot record is returned instead. Because of stealth techniques it may be impossible to detect a virus once it has become resident in memory.
• ACTIVATION CRITERIA AND EFFECT- The other area that gives a virus its personality is the activation. Some activate by the date, others activate when a certain program is run, and other will activate when they can’t find any more files that haven’t been infected yet. what do you do if you can’t find the CD with the original key. You can discover the key using the trick below.

Steps :

1. Insert the Windows XP disk inside your computer.
2. Explore the CD from my computer.
3. Open the folder I386.
4. Locate the file UNATTEND.TXT and open it.
5. Scroll down to the last line and there you will find the product key.

Have fun ! Now u’ll never need to search for a product code for XP again

Steps

1. Go to http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net and download the ophcracklivecd iso that is offered there (~455 MB).
   
2. Burn the iso file to CD using an image burning software.
3. Put the CD in the disc drive of the computer you want to crack the passwords of.
4. Boot from disc. This shouldn’t be to hard. Depending on computer, enter the bios settings and change the boot settings to boot from a disc drive on first boot device.
5. Exit BIOS setting.
6. Ophcrack will initiate by itself.
7. The logo screen should appear, at which you should hit enter. Text should scroll down the screen, and eventually you will have a graphical interface pop up, with the one and only window (Ophcrack).
8. Once the system is done, select the user account you wish to recover the password for, and click launch.
9. Depending on the speed of your system, the cracker will go to work, and if it can determine and decrypt your password, it will eventually display it in the “NTPassword” column

Tips

• Ophcrack is a Windows password cracker based on a time-memory trade-off using rainbow tables. This is a new variant of Hellman’s original trade-off, with better performance. It recovers 99.9% of alphanumeric passwords in seconds.

A) Remove these files manually using DOS Command Prompt:-
Go to Start->Run>Type “cmd“ [Without Quotes]
Then use the following commands
X: Where X is your flashdrive
attrib -s -h -r autorun.inf Changing the attributes of the file

del autorun.inf Deleting the file

NOTE:
1. Here, -s -h ,-r means we are removing the attributes system file, hidden, read only resp.(if any) so that it can be deleted.
2. Hold ‘shift’ while inserting the flash drive for 10-15 sec to disable autorun temporarily.

B)Using Smart-Antivirus :
i found a small piece of software which basically runs the same commands at the back end but performs it with more accuracy and more easiness, just with one click of your mouse. Its called “Smart-Anti-Virus“. Well tell you the truth its not an anti-virus basically but its a small handy program made in visual basic to automate all the DOS Commands i explained to you earlier.

It can perform following actions, in case viruses have affected these functions:

• Enable Run
• Enable Registry Editor
• Enable Command Prompt
• Enable Folder Options
• Disable Autoplay on all drives
• Restore All folder Option settings
